life cycles
o hare and bramble
come and linger
twine with moon and womb
in a spiral wandering
to loving hands who'll hold you close

the life of a hare
mountain hare (Lepus timidus) dwell in the craggy uplands of the uk. threatened by dwindling snowfall as the climate crisis takes its toll. in grassland and the edges of woodland, the elusive brown hare (Lepus europaeus) can be found. darting through stories, hares have visited our hearths through folklore for many years.
witnessing and celebrating the spiralling of seasons and moon phases has been a love of mine. we meet each period as old friends: reflecting on our lives and experiencing new adventures together. what a joy to be alive.
with these pieces, i intertwined a stylised life cycle of hare with the moon and the seasons.
- a young leveret sits beside a spring flower beneath the sliver of a growing moon
- the parent rests with love in their heart, knowing their young are safe. the summer food is bountiful and the full moon lights their way.
-
under a waning moon, the zig-zag movement catches your eye. a shiver tremers through you in the autumn chill. the smile tugs at your lips, perhaps that was the hare you saw in this place many years ago.
-
a dark winters night, the new moon gazing down. the stars glint faintly against the bones. their body fed the life and land.
a womb of brambles
brambles (Rubus fruticosus) are a common woody shrub tangling up our gardens, hedgerows, 'wastelands', and woodlands. for many years now we have known each other.
reproductive organs are beautiful and strange. my relationship to mine has been fraught, challenging and wonderful. sexual assault, sexually-transmitted diseases, birth control, body issues, queerness, curiosity, desire, and pleasure... i am ever on the journey of witnessing this part of myself with all the love we deserve.
i have had the pleasure of living by and charting the patterns of my menstrual cycle for many years now. i began connecting with this guiding cycle at the same time as i meditated with brambles for the first time, reaching for a wild soul who would accept all the pain and confusion i had surrounding my sensual self.
seasonal archetypes have been a non-binary love of mine exploring these menstrual and moon cycles. queerness will always live within these concepts for me.
these pieces tangle together brambles, menstrual and moon cycles.
